Although slavery was an unjust institution in all realms, certain areas did technically allow rights to their slaves; but chattel slavery denied the slave any autonomy over their own destiny. As stated Chattel slavery was "property." Again, ancient Rome and Latin American slavery, was far from benign, but these regions allowed the slaves certain rights.
